Introduction

Hello Everyone! Today I wanted to create a blog and possible discussion about the similarities between comic books and Mythology. I felt like doing my first comparison with Marvel comics since it's all over in the media and becoming more popular as more and more movies are made about them. I hope you guys enjoy reading my posts on this topic and add any thoughts or opinions you may also have. Enjoy!

  1. Although I do not read comic books nor have I watched the movie 'Avengers' (I know-what rock am I under,) I did enjoy reading your post. I grew up watching the original 'Hulk' and 'Captain America' original television series. I know you did not mention him but the 'Flash Gordon' television show was one of my favorites and so was 'Wonder Women'. I can definitely see the comparisons you have pointed out with these comic book characters. Some of the characters in this movie that you describe, I have never heard of. You have inspired me to watch this movie so that I can view it with mythology goggles on.

  2. I just read the title and I automatically loved it!! I LOVE the Avengers!!

I had never made these connections before -- but now that you've pointed it out, I can totally see it! Hawkeye is Apollo, Black Widow is Artemis...it makes sense, and it's fascinating! These modern characters and their modern problems are wonderful representations and sorts of 'reincarnations' of ancient mythological people. Whether or not Stan Lee intended it to be so, it still makes sense; and in turn this proves that, whether consciously or unconsciously, mythology is still very prominent in our society today. Great ideas, Gina!!

    1. Thanks Rebecca. I was thinking the same thing. I was wondering if Stan lee intended there to be a link with mythology or if it just happened to be that way. He is a brilliant writer and it fascinates me that he was able to create so many great comics.

  3. Hi Gina,
The look of your blog is fun - saturated colors that help present the "comic book" artistry we're all familiar with. You also set up some wonderful comparisons between modern comic book heroes and ancient mythic heroes. My favorite is Iron Man. I'm amazed I didn't see his incredible similarity to Hephaestus/Vulcan! The pictures you include perfectly illustrate your points.

It's interesting to me that we think we're so far removed from the ancient mythology we study! In reality, as you show, we simply reframe the narratives of old into forms that project the cultural values we experience and the answers for the big questions that satisfy more modern believers.

    Loved it!
